Warren County Fiscal Court approves Beech Bend Road widening project

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Over the last several years, motorists have hit a speed bump trying to access Beech Bend Park on busy race days. Some of them have even turned around due to the headache of bumper to bumper traffic.

“It’s difficult to convince people that have had a bad experience to come back,” said Sherry Murphy, the executive director of the Bowling Green Convention and Visitors Bureau.

On Friday, Warren County’s fiscal court made a unanimous decision they hope will make that experience better the second time around.

“It will move people in so much more efficiently,” said Warren County Judge-Executive Michael Buchanon.

Magistrates approved the $352,000 price tag to fund widening a portion of the road, which should make it easier to enter the venue. A majority of the money is coming from state discretionary funds.

“It’s time we put a little more infrastructure into being able to pull off those events to a greater level,” said Murphy.

Yet, several residents, many of whom live near the road, remain concerned and spoke out about it at the meeting.

Janice Glasser said her daughter recently moved into a new home not far from the park.

“I just wish there was another way that they could handle things. I’m not sure the expanding of those lanes will help and I really don’t want to see them expand the whole road. It’s really going to take away from the country atmosphere of Beech Bend Road,” said Glasser.

Construction on the road should begin in the next few weeks, with a completion date of mid to late April.
