Warm the hearts and feet of seniors: 6,400+ pairs of socks collected!

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-Warm the hearts and feet of seniors…

“This particular part of our society is often overlooked. And yet they’re one of the reasons why our society is the way that it is,” said volunteer Heather Bitterling.

…that’s the motto behind Christian Family Radio’s Socks for Seniors drive.

“We’ve had people with tears in their eyes, just I can’t even explain the feeling of wonder or excitement they have when we come into the room to give them this gift,” said Bitterling.

This year they collected over 6,400 pairs of socks for the elderly in over 40 senior care locations in our region.

“Fuzzy socks, lots of socks with grippies on the bottom, holiday socks,” said volunteer Cathy Garrison.

Why socks you might ask?

“It brings back those memories, those memories of family, everyone gets the socks from grandma and maybe at the time it doesn’t feel like something special but these elderly people have those memories as a deep well in their spirit,” said Bitterling.

And the youngest generation was involved in giving back to the older generation…handmade cards included!

“Merry Christmas elderly. To elderly: I hope you have the best Christmas ever, Merry Christmas,” Garrison read one of the cards.

Two local elementary schools collected nearly 1,000 of the pairs of socks for the facilities.

“We are warming their feet, these seniors, but it truly is true we’re warming their hearts…our youth are learning what it means to give back and not just receive at Christmas,” said Garrison.
