Walk to remember Srebrenica this Sunday
Backpack drive remembering Srebrenica genocide
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Members of Bowling Green’s large Bosnian community are marching to honor families and friends lost to the Srebrenica Genocide in 1995.
The Bosnian community and Stuff the Bus Foundation of SOKY invite you to The Walk to Remember Srebrenica & Backpack Drive this Sunday, July 10th at noon.
The significance of us donating backpacks at the walk stems back to 27 years ago when refugees fled genocide from their Eastern Bosnian hometown, Srebrenica, with only the belongings they could fit in their backpacks.
The backpacks will go towards schools in underprivileged areas here in Kentucky.
Over the last quarter of a century, the Bowling Green Bosnian community has created public exhibits and programs remembering the nearly 9000 people who lost their lives to the war and ethnic cleansing.
Two of the organizers along with city and state representatives will speak at Circus Square Park before the walk begins at noon.
One of the event organizers, Adela Muhic said, “It’s crazy to think about where our people were 27 years ago versus where we are right now, as in everything we were able to build from literally nothing. We had nothing.”
Muhic says Bowling Green serves as a sanctuary city – Bosnians making up around 10 percent of the Bowling Green’s population.
