Volunteers paint beautiful mural on basketball court at Gorin Park
GLASGOW, Ky.-The basketball courts at Gorin Park in Glasgow are looking a lot more colorful now.
“It’s just beautiful, it makes you want to be here,” said Barren County School District Youth Service Center Coordinator Shelly Thomas.
Volunteers from the Resilience Factor Program spent hours painting a beautiful, colorful mural over the two ball courts
“They were so on board with rolling those sleeves up and getting busy on these projects,” said Thomas.
Including nine-year-old Barren County native Kinadee Hawk. She’s been helping with community service projects ever since she was a little girl.
“I’ve been doing stuff like this since I was three. And I really think it really helps our community look better,” said Hawk.
The hope is that it will bring in a more positive vibe to the courts
“We’ve already seen traffic has been a lot better, a lot of people stopping by just to check it out and I think we’ll have more events down here,” said Glasgow Parks & Rec Director Eddie Furlong.
Prior to the redesign, it was an infamous hang out spot for drinking, drugs and other dodgy activity.
“It was used for stuff that wasn’t supposed to be used here,” said Hawk.
“Some illegal activities that happened in a lot of parks, you know, in urban areas. So it was important to bring some new life into it,” said Thomas.
The project was made possible through a $100,000 grant from the Governor’s Education Emergency Relief Fund.
And there’s other projects in the works for the park too- including a disc golf course.
“We want to make it look better for people who have never been here before to let them see that we’re a good community and we do great stuff here,” said Hawk.
