Two monkeypox cases reported in Kentucky
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- A local health expert says that two monkeypox cases have been reported in the Commonwealth.
Infectious disease specialists say the viral disease is related to the smallpox virus; however, it is much milder and rarely fatal.
Current outbreak symptoms include a rash in the hands, face or genital area.
Dr. Heather Lusby, an infectious disease specialist at Med Center Health, said, “It doesn’t have the potential to be a pandemic because we know people who have a symptom, and you need very intimate direct contact to get this… and case numbers are really low right now.”
There is a vaccine available for anyone that tests positive for monkeypox.
The location of the two confirmed cases of monkeypox has not been released but we do know they are outside of our area.
