Two civilians administer CPR to unconscious woman in car

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- It was a normal day at work for cousins Dwight O’Dell and Ryan Gibbs.

They were going to pick up construction material on Wednesday when they came upon a stopped car in an unusual place off of Nashville Road.

“We passed through the industrial park and there was a lady in her vehicle pulled over. It looked like she was taking a nap. We started to drive on by, but instincts said no, that ain’t right,” said Gibbs.

Their instincts, the reason the men pulled over.

“I got out of the truck and pulled over and I could see right when I was walking up it didn’t look like a good situation,” said Gibbs.

O’Dell and Gibbs immediately called 911 and were instructed by paramedics to give the woman CPR. Their life-saving backgrounds helped- O’Dell a volunteer firefighter, and Gibbs a retired jail deputy chief.

“We’re trained in CPR and know firsthand what to do and how to act. My background kicked in and you do what you’re supposed to do,” said O’Dell.

O’Dell’s son and his friend helped to redirect traffic and flag down the emergency vehicles. The woman was rushed to the hospital. Her family posted on Facebook to find who they called “the good Samaritans” that gave her CPR. Once they found O’Dell and Gibbs, they couldn’t thank them enough.

“I mean that’s somebody’s mom, somebody’s wife, aunt. Something like that happens, you just react,” said Gibbs.

“I feel like we just did what anybody else would do. Just stop and help somebody,” said O’Dell.

The woman’s condition has not been released.
