Trump issues first veto

(NBC News) President Trump issued his first veto Friday, striking down Congress’ resolution to terminate his declaration of a national emergency.

The president declared the emergency in order to divert funds Congress had allocated to other projects toward construction of a wall along the southern border with Mexico.

The veto comes after a strong, and many say politically embarrassing, rebuke from the Republican-led Senate.

Twelve senators in his own party joined with Democrats to block his emergency declaration, calling the president’s move an unconstitutional “power grab.”

The next challenge will likely come in the Courts. Twenty states have already filed suits against the president’s national emergency.
