Trump escalates attacks on Baltimore and Rep. Cummings
(NBC News) President Trump is under fire for his latest tweets, attacking the city of Baltimore and Rep. Elijah Cummings.
On Sunday, the president called Cummings, who is black, a racist for focusing on the Mueller investigation instead of his own backyard.
The outburst followed similar tweets on Saturday, with the president referring to Cummings’ district as “a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess” and said later that night, “Statistically, Baltimore ranks last in almost every major category.” It was not clear what set of statistics Trump was referencing.
Top Democrats as well as prominent Baltimoreans are rebuking Mr. Trump’s comments as “racist,” “disgraceful” and “dangerous.”
The White House continues to defend the president.
