Tree dedicated to late volunteer highlights Houchens Center’s holiday tradition

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WNKY) – A long-standing Christmas tradition at the Houchens Center carries a deeper meaning this year, as organizers dedicated one of the event’s most recognizable trees to the late Romanza Johnson, a beloved supporter remembered for her generosity and volunteer spirit.

The “Trees of Christmas” Open House, now in its 47th year, fills the historic center with dozens of decorated trees from civic groups, organizations and individuals. But the Salvation Army-themed tree, placed in its familiar spot near the entrance, stands as a tribute to Johnson, who passed away earlier this year.

Carol Flora Collins, president of the Houchens Center Board, said the dedication honors Johnson’s commitment to helping others, especially during the cold winter months.

“Romanza always made sure we collected cold weather clothes for people who needed them,” Collins said. “She passed away earlier this year, so we wanted to dedicate this tree in her memory. I think she’d be very pleased, she’s probably smiling down on us right now.”

Johnson’s passion for supporting the Salvation Army and ensuring families had scarves, hats and gloves made the tree a natural choice for the memorial.

The Open House, running through Dec. 22, invites the community to tour the trees, shop the gift room, and vote for their favorite display. Organizers say the event is both a celebration of creativity and a reminder of the volunteers, like Johnson, whose quiet efforts continue to warm the community year after year.
