Thousands of Kentuckians are without power right now and that might mean your city’s traffic light has gone out too.

When traffic lights are malfunctioning or out of service, it can create confusion and chaos at intersections. However, there are rules of the road that still apply to ensure safety for all.

Here’s what you should do if the power goes out for the traffic lights in your area.

When traffic signals are not working or flashing red, drivers should treat the intersection as an all-way stop and come to a complete stop before proceeding. This means vehicles should take turns moving through the intersection clockwise. Drivers should remain stopped until it’s safe to continue through the intersection without impeding other traffic.

If the lights are flashing yellow, proceed with caution and treat the light as a yield.
