Toys for Tots, TVA unveil new book nook in Glasgow

BARREN COUNTY, Ky. – Toys for Tots has 10 book nooks in the Commonwealth that provide community relief, and now Barren County has helped around 1,900 children in the county last year alone.

With the new book nook in downtown Glasgow, more kids will have the chance to pick up their own book and even a toy or two.

Janel Doyle, Toys for Tots coordinator, says “We are a year-round force for good now, not just at Christmas. And we want to promote love and literacy, and we can do that through the book nook.”

Toys for Tots inspired the Tennessee Valley Authority to take part in supporting local children and families by putting the book nook in Barren County.

Jana Sublett, government and community relations program coordinator for TVA, says, “Seeing all that Janel and the Toys for Tots in this area that they’re doing, I noticed that they were doing the, the book nook in Warren County, and I was like, ‘man, this is a great opportunity for us to do some partnerships with some of our local power companies.’”

Not only will this lighten the financial load for parents, it will also make learning more enjoyable.

Stacy Janes, program coordinator to T.J. Community Mission Foundation says, “I hope that they are just as happy. It makes the moms happy that their kids have gotten something that doesn’t have to necessarily cost from anything. If they’re in a fixed situation just one more opportunity. The kid has to open a book, use their imagination and learn some things.”

Toys for Tots covers 23 counties, and although each county needs something different, there’s one thing they have in common – they all need support from the community.

“Every county is unique,” Doyle says. “And that’s one thing I’ve learned. Every county is unique. So to be a part of children’s lives in multiple counties is the biggest blessing that anyone could experience.”
