Toys for Tots Hosts Surprise Shopping Spree for Foster Families in South Central Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Foster children from across south-central Kentucky received a special surprise thanks to a shopping spree hosted by Toys for Tots, which allowed families to select free toys and books while creating positive memories that extend beyond the holiday season.

Each child participating in the event was able to choose two toys and books at no cost. Organizers said the goal is to help children feel valued and experience the joy that comes with receiving a gift throughout the year, not just during Christmas.

“We really love promoting the year-round force for good,” said Janel Doyle, Toys for Tots coordinator. “There should be joy in a child’s heart year-round, not just at Christmas. To be able to give back to our community year-round is such an amazing act.”

Organizers emphasized that events like the shopping spree are only possible because of community support and donations. They also noted the unique challenges many foster children face.

“These foster children come out of difficult situations,” said Commander Gerald Mounce. “A lot of them sometimes actually have PTSD. This way, we can help alleviate some of that stress and make them feel more welcome.”

For many of the children, the experience meant more than receiving free items.

“It’s good to ask for support because mental health is definitely a thing,” said Damiyon Thomas, a foster child of Laura Harper. “Free gifts feel good. A lot of people don’t always have good intentions, but this feels good.”

Toys for Tots leaders said the program’s impact extends beyond the children it serves, providing volunteers and donors with a sense of purpose as well.

“You know that you’re a difference-maker, and that’s an internal motivation that drives us,” said Anthony Wilson, special projects coordinator for Toys for Tots. “Whether it’s at the local level or, in my case, at the national level, you’re doing something that’s bigger than yourself.”

Gracie Marie Lowe, another foster child in Harper’s care, said she was surprised by the opportunity.

“You want other people to love us and care about us, and they really love us,” Lowe said. “I was shocked that we were going to get it.”

Doyle said the smiles on children’s faces are a direct result of the generosity of local donors who make the event possible.

“These kids get to shop only because of the generosity in our community and those who give monetary donations… The families are very touched, and seeing the kids smile when they get to pick out their own items is just amazing.”
