Throwback Thursday: Orchestra Kentucky
Founded in the summer of 2000 by friends Jeff Reed and Mike Thurman, Orchestra Kentucky has grown from a group of professional musicians to a staple in the city’s music and arts culture.
A group of six local orchestra professionals comprised the first Bowling Green Chamber Orchestra, along with Reed as Music Director and Thurman as President. The first rehearsals were at Royal Music Company and the first performance was to a crowd of 150 at Christ Episcopal Church.
After its first season of performances, the orchestra was incorporated into a Kentucky non-profit. In 2009 the group was officially renamed Orchestra Kentucky to reflect its growth and increasing reach across southern Kentucky.
To add variety to its programs, the orchestra put together a group of local rock musicians and vocalists for new shows. Named The Rewinders, they’re the retro and variety series group that still performs with the orchestra. Listeners recognize the group from Beatles covers to 80s pop.
The orchestra expanded its focus to musical education and cultural heritage with a Youth Orchestra in 2001 and a String Academy in 2003. Now more than 200 students participate and have opportunities to explore the world of music.
Over the past 18 years, the orchestra has performed in all the surrounding counties. The Rewinders have performed across the country from California to Maine. Orchestra concerts are held at SKyPAC and have grown to over 800 people in attendance.
The community benefits from orchestra programs, all themed around important musical milestones, unique events, anniversaries and holidays.
