Throwback Thursday: Med Center Health celebrates 100 years of caring
Sunday, August 2nd marked a milestone in Bowling Green history as Med Center Health celebrated 100 years since the opening of City Hospital, the original organization that would grow into the region’s largest healthcare system.
When City Hospital first opened its doors on August 2, 1926, it represented a bold investment in the health and future of the community. What began as a single hospital has evolved over the past century into Med Center Health, a comprehensive regional healthcare system serving patients across Southcentral Kentucky with advanced medical care, specialty services, and thousands of dedicated employees. To commemorate the Centennial, Med Center Health looked to the past in a unique way by opening a time capsule that had remained sealed for 74 years.
The capsule was placed inside the cornerstone of the hospital in 1952 during an expansion project. It was sealed by then-Bowling Green mayor Elvis Campbell with the hope that future generations would one day discover the items preserved inside. That day finally arrived as community leaders, employees, and retirees gathered to witness the opening of the capsule. Inside were newspapers, photographs, documents, a bible, and other artifacts that offered a remarkable snapshot of life in Bowling Green during the early 1950s. Each item served as a reminder of the community’s enduring commitment to healthcare and the people who have shaped it over the decades.
The ceremony connected two defining moments in the hospital’s history — the optimism of those who expanded city-county hospital in 1952 and the celebration of a century of service in 2026. While medicine has changed dramatically over the last 100 years, Med Center Health’s mission has remained remarkably consistent: providing compassionate, high-quality care close to home. From advances in technology and specialized treatment to expanded facilities throughout the region, the organization has continued to grow alongside the communities it serves.
As Med Center Health celebrates its Centennial, the opening of the long-forgotten time capsule reminds us that history is more than dates and buildings. It’s the story of generations of caregivers, patients, families, and community leaders who believed in building a healthier future. 100 years after City Hospital welcomed its first patients, its commitment continues by honoring the past while preparing for the next century of care in Southcentral Kentucky.
Med Center Health will officially celebrate this milestone on Saturday, August 15th with a ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new High Street Tower, followed by the 100th Birthday Bash from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the campus of the Medical Center at Bowling Green. All are welcome!
