Throwback Thursday: Indian Hills Country Club
A Bowling Green institution is celebrating over 62 years in 2018. Just off Cemetery Road, the Indian Hills Country Club was founded in 1956. It’s grown to be one of the most trusted golf clubs in the city and serves as a neighborhood hub for the Fairview area.
There were 16 founding members of Indian Hills Country Club. They purchased land on the East side of Bowling Green overlooking the Barren River. The area was an orchard and extensive farmland at the time, but the founding 16 wanted to turn the land into a club with a friendly, comfortable atmosphere.
Golf course architect William B. Langford designed an 18-hole layout when the club was established, but only the first nine holes were initially built. The club grew with a swimming pool and new members, and the other nine holes were added by 1970. The club has been used by local organizations and WKU for golf tournaments and special events for decades.
The name Indian Hills comes from artifacts discovered in the area. During every phase of the golf course’s development and club construction, Native American artifacts have been found. Members and guests will notice the street names surrounding the club as Native American tribes.
The club’s mascot is the Lonesome Polecat, the animated character created by Al Capp, the writer for the Li’l Abner comic strip. Capp was even given honorary membership to the club in exchange for using the image.
Indian Hills has expanded to include several amenities. The course has new turf grass as of this summer. There’s also the golf shop, grille restaurant and bar, fitness facilities and personal trainer access, massage therapy, card playing rooms, and special event space for all occasions.
