Threats issued on immigration and Mueller probe

(NBC News) Ultimatums being fired from both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue are setting up showdowns this week on two major topics: immigration and special counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Russian election meddling.

The Justice Department says a redacted version of Mueller’s report should be released by mid-April, but if Congress doesn’t get the full report by Tuesday, House Democrats are threatening a subpoena vote on Wednesday.

The vote would authorize House Judiciary Chair Jerry Nadler to subpoena the report, and its underlying evidence, as well as documents from five former White House officials related to that investigation.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration says the president is serious about shutting down the border with Mexico because of the record number of families and unaccompanied children who are trying to enter the United States.

Critics say closing the border could make matters worse, not to mention it would slow down trade. Nearly half of all imported fruits and vegetables come from Mexico. Experts predict the shutdown could trigger an avocado shortage, causing states to run out of the fruit in about three weeks.

The Associated Press reports the president is considering an immigration czar to coordinate border policy, and already has two potential candidates.
