Those missing in action are remembered at Post 23
BOWLING GREEN Ky.-Prisoners of war and missing in action. Both are listed on a flag that represents those who are missing from their days serving this nation.
At the American Legion post 23, the POW/MIA recognition ceremony presented by the U.S. Military Vets Motorcycle Club was held. People came out to remember that there are still warriors yet to come home. Neil Glover of the U.S. Military Vets Motorcycle Club says year after year, it’s important to remember these individuals.
“If you don’t remember those who are lost and are no longer with us, you tend to forget them. We don’t want to forget those who are no longer with us,” Glover said.
The setup of the table is a symbol of the warrior who hasn’t made it home. Each item on the table represents something. The round table represents the never-ending thoughts of those missing. The rose for the faith that friends, and family keep that they may return. A slice of lemon to represent a bitter fate. A pinch of salt for tears of the loved ones of the missing warrior. The Bible, for the faith of the county. The lit candle, illuminating the way home, and the empty chair to show that they’re not yet with us.
Those who did make it home from combat are thankful that they could, and they further emphasize that these missing soldiers need to be remembered in every way possible.
“A lot of our service people have been forgotten over the years. This is one way that the public and our service members can show everybody that they remember, and they want to remember what has happened to our service men,” Said Veteran Jim Manley.
Glover explains how it makes him feel to be the one to put on this ceremony.
“Honored. Very very honored that I’m in a group that takes our military service and our dedication to this country serious,” Glover said.
