Things to know about Alzheimer’s ahead of the Fourth of July
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – As the month of June wraps up and summer parties are in full swing, it’s important to check in on our older family members, especially on holidays like the Fourth of July.
Over 7 million Americans that are 65 years older are living with Alzheimer’s, and by 2060, this number is projected to triple.
Often times, Alzheimer’s can make holidays like the Fourth of July very difficult. That’s why experts say if you have older family members, it may be a good idea to pay a little closer attention.
There are certain warning signs that you can pay attention to, like confusion with time and place, difficulty speaking or writing or problems solving challenges.
Experts say it’s important to note these changes to aid in early diagnosis.
Dr. Greg Cooper, director of Neuroscience Institute Memory Center with Norton, says to also “look for changes in their behavior.” This could be differences in routine, like how they take care of themselves and their home.
Cooper also said to check if there is “any spoiled food” in the fridge.
Medical professionals also recommend to address family members with possible Alzheimer’s with respect, kindness and patience.
