The need for blood donations

BOWLING GREEN, KY.- With spring break starting, it is a peak time for travel, and with hundreds of college students who normally donate blood going out of town the need for blood donations is on the rise. Blood is considered a medicine in most hospitals.  It’s being used for a wide variety of illnesses. With blood typically donated by college students and with the spike in travel this year between the months of March and April, the amount of donations is down.

Brooke Katz Blood assurance media relations coordinator tells us, “It’s being used for cancer patients and it’s being used for sickle cell patients. That’s just to name a few. So even though the world kind of goes on a spring break, the need never stops. And it is a relentless need. And there’s unfortunately almost always a shortage. And there’s only one way to get this medicine, and it’s through the generosity of donors.”
If you’re interested in donating blood and if you are specifically o-negative there are prizes and gift cards that you can receive. For more information on donation locations visit https://www.bloodassurance.org/where-to-donate/.
