The Medical Center receives 2020 Karpf Award for stroke care

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-The Norton Healthcare/UK Healthcare – Stroke Care Network has awarded The Medical Center with the 2020 Karpf Award.

“I think it’s recognition of all the great things that are happening here at The Med Center in Bowling Green around improving outcomes for our acute stroke patients,” said Bill Singletary, Director of Specialty Certifications and Clinical Documentation Improvement for the Medical Center.

The award recognizes the Center’s work in improving stroke care and outcomes in the communities they serve and for improving stroke systems of care throughout the state of Kentucky.

“It speaks to our active involvement in this Stroke Care Network that Norton and UK have put together. That collaboration and networking allows us to not only learn from them, but to share our own expertise as we try to improve these systems of care within the Commonwealth,” said Singletary.

There are 33 hospitals or medical centers within the Stroke Care Network including the Med Center. Singletary says what this means for the future.

“For Med Center Health it means that we’re going to continue our work in expanding access to certified stroke centers including our hospitals in Franklin, Caverna, Scottsville and Albany. So we’re currently working towards their own certifications so we can continue to provide this evidence-based stroke care in all the communities that we provide service to,” said Singletary.

Someone in the U.S. has a stroke every 40 seconds and someone dies of a stroke every four minutes. Singletary says it’s their mission to make sure surrounding counties have access to this type of care.
