League of Women Voters talks about the importance of voter knowledge
BOWLING GREEN, KY.- With politicians making decisions at both the state and local levels, experts say it’s important for citizens to have a general understanding of key bills and their rights.
No matter your political party, having knowledge about candidates and their priorities before you vote can help you understand how those decisions may affect you.
Becky Jones, Vice President of the League of Women Voters, said it’s critical for citizens to stay engaged.
“It’s so important for citizens to pay attention. And I know it just becomes burdensome and it feels like, ‘What’s the point of voting because nobody listens?’ The point is, we only have power if we exercise our right to vote,” Jones said.
Jones also emphasized the impact one bill passed in April could have on military service members, people who have changed their names, and others.
“The SAVE Act is just one of many attempts to undermine the advances made possible for all legal voters under the National Voter Registration Act of 1993,” she said.
While voters’ values may not align with every political figure, understanding what each candidate brings to the table can help guide decisions at the ballot box.
“I’m not advocating for anyone to vote in any particular party or for any particular candidate, but it is the lack of participation that hurts … society,” Jones said.
