The City of Glasgow celebrates the opening of the Joyce Driver Aquatic Center
BARREN COUNTY, Ky.- Thursday afternoon, a ribbon cutting was held to celebrate the opening of the Joyce Driver Aquatic Center this Saturday, a project eight years in the making.
Community members gathered to celebrate the unveiling of the new water park which was a substantial upgrade from the “L” shaped pool that opened back in 1971.
The new Aquatic Center includes two water slides, a family slide, a climbing wall, basketball goals, a playground and a lily pad bridge that will be installed this summer.
This is the first Aquatic Center of it’s kind in the city of Glasgow and will expand just beyond being a pool.
It was a long time coming getting this project finished. Starting back in 2018, the construction and planning has seen three different mayors in it’s time but after many trials and tribulations its time to open it to the public.
When it came time to name the Aquatic Center, Joyce Driver’s name was the first to come to mind of Parks and Recreation Director Eddie Furlong. Driver was a longtime employee and a strong pillar in the community of Glasgow.
“She was the Assistant Pool Manager, she worked concessions for us. But on top of that, she worked in the school system for years as a Special Education Assistant and also in the Cafeteria for the schools. So she’s been around kids her entire life and has had a hand in helping them grow up,” Furlong stated.
Season passes are now available for purchase and opening day will be Saturday, May 23 at 11 a.m.
To make opening day even more special, Joyce Driver herself will be handing out the very first ticket at the new Aquatic Center. For more information on ticket and season pass prices or general park information, visit https://www.facebook.com/GlasgowParksRecreationKY
