The Bowling Green fire department is looking for qualified, diverse candidates
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Bowling Green Fire Department is currently hiring and is looking for qualified, diverse candidates to apply and join the team.
Katie McKee, a representative from the Bowling Green Fire Department, say the firefighters are a family and want to continue bringing more and more different religions, ethnicities, nationalities and females into their family to better represent Bowling Green’s diverse culture.
“Bowling Green is a large, diverse city and we want that representation within our department,” said McKee.
From 2015 until 2019, the department had no sworn females, but over the last two years, they have hired one woman.
“When that little girl sees a woman firefighter show up, she knows, ‘Hey, I can do that. I can be a firefighter,’” said McKee.
Bowling Green Director of Human Resources and Risk Management Erin Hulsey says the physical test takes hard work to pass.
“It is challenging, but females can do it. We have had females do it and that is not necessarily a barrier. Males have to work hard to pass that exam and females have to work hard too, but absolutely, you can do it,” said Hulsey.
Also in 2015, the department was made up of less than 3% minorities, but this year, the percentage has raised to 8%.
“We definitely want our fire department to be a representation of the community when they go out and go out and serve, they are going to people in some of their worst moments and we want there to be a connection at all levels. So, I think that it’s very important that they see the fire department and the fire department looks a little bit like them and that includes having minorities and that includes females as well,” said Hulsey.
