The 7th Grade Experience at Barren County Middle School

GLASGOW, Ky.- Barren County Middle School is gearing up for the school year and giving seventh graders the chance to experience a day in the life of a seventh grader before the school year begins.

“They’re coming from seven different elementary schools. So this is a big, huge transition for them. A lot of them are very, very, very nervous,” says Heather Meredith, 7th grade principal.

To better help incoming 7th graders prepare, Barren County Middle School is giving the seventh graders a sneak peek into the school year, and this is easing the nerves.

“I was a little bit nervous to kind of because I’ve always been in elementary school, so this was a change,” says Annalee Hoggard, a 7th grader.

Anne Claire Bow, a 7th grader, shares how this day gives the students a chance to make a few mistakes and learn the ropes.

“Before this, I’ve been, like, nervous And yeah, today has helped because I went into the wrong classroom and then I helped me get into the right.”

Ms. Heather Meredith also tells us how, creating a safe space for every middle schooler to thrive is the top priority and with resources like the seventh-grade experience guarantee that students are able to be more confident on their official first day.

“Now, you know, they were with these same students for seven years. They’re coming into a new building, all seven elementaries coming together as one. They’re going to be in classes with students they don’t know. So today allows them to meet those students for the first time before you know, the first day of school.”
