Teachers will be among the first to receive the vaccine
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Governor Andy Beshear announced educators will be among the first to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
According to a Kentucky Department of Education press release, the first round of vaccines will go to healthcare workers and nursing home staff and will be distributed starting Dec. 15.
After the first group is vaccinated, priority will go to EMS workers and educators.
Beshear is unsure of exactly when educators will receive their vaccines but has already asked superintendents to begin preparing rosters of school personnel who are willing to be vaccinated.
Since it is unlikely that one shipment of vaccines will cover everyone within a school, districts are being instructed to consider prioritizing those who have a higher chance of exposure to the virus.
Lauren Simmons, the art teacher at Barren County High School hopes the vaccine will get the children back into school soon.
According to the release, Beshear says the vaccines are distributed on a federal level, but the states direct where they should go.
