Teacher reportedly assigns slave games research
(WTMJ) A physical education teacher in Shorewood, Wisconsin is on leave after students said they were forced to re-enact slavery, as part of an assignment.
While some students presented dodge ball, others say they were paired up by race, and told to re-enact slavery games.
“Ms. Zehren forced me and my partner to re-enact slavery in front of the entire class,” said Alexis Averette, a 7th grader at Shorewood Intermediate School. “When we told her we were uncomfortable, she told us we still had to do it.”
Averette told her parents, who voiced their concerns to the school. In response, the teacher, Jan Zehren, was escorted out of building and placed on leave.
The district sent a letter to students and parents saying they were investigating, but some say that’s not enough.
“We don’t want her here, and that’s not just for my child, but for any other child. No one should have to go through this,” said Averette’s father, Yuri.
Zehren taught physical education in the Shorewood School District for 36 years.
She has not yet commented on the allegations levied against her.
