Surgical technicians keep operating rooms moving
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – If you wind up in an operating room, you may notice there are plenty of people working around you.
One person you may not realize is there…a surgical technician. Although surgical techs have been around since World War II, their job became a career-oriented position in the seventies
Haylee Harmon is a certified surgical tech at Tristar Greenview Regional Hospital, and being a surgical tech is a job she takes seriously. She says she likes seeing patients leave the operating room ready to move on to a healthier or more normal life.
In order to become a certified surgical tech, Haylee earned her associate’s degree in surgical technology at SKYCTC and then took a board exam.
And her job is not just about helping patients. Dr. Rachel Bryant, a general surgeon at Tristar Greenview, says surgical technicians make a positive impact for surgeons by helping make sure the surgical instruments are prepared properly and that proper procedures are followed for safety and to reduce the risk of the patient developing an infection.
