Super Bowl drinking: keep you and others safe

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-Super Bowl Sunday is a fun night of eating and drinking…but for some that are sober or in early steps of recovery it may be a little stressful.

“It may trigger times of when they were drinking, and it’s also just very difficult to be around substances when you’re trying not to use them,” said Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor Kristy Fuller.

If you know you’re going to an event with alcohol, prepare yourself beforehand.

“Maybe you go to a 12 step meeting before you go to the Super Bowl party, maybe you call a sponsor, or a close supportive friend, definitely have a plan of action. I can leave if I have to, and have an exit strategy planned out,” said Fuller.

If you’re someone who does drink, but is trying to cut back their alcohol intake, try bringing some other beverages too.

“You can take some non-alcoholic choices with you so if you want to enjoy a couple of alcoholic drinks but have other options that you can enjoy that’s important. You don’t necessarily know if your host will have these things but you can bring them with you,” said Fuller.

If you are planning for a long night of fun, please keep yourself and others safe, especially getting home.

“Even the family that’s driving on the roadway that’s coming back from wherever their destination was you’re putting them at risk. Think about the other people that are on the road, think about the other people in your vehicle and just make a responsible decision. A lot of times it’s as easy as thinking ahead and having a sober driver take you home,” said KSP Post 3 Public Affairs Officer Trooper Daniel Priddy.
