Summer reading gets Kentucky kids ready for the future
BOWLING GREEN Ky.- Summer can be seen as a prime time to get kids ready for preschool.
The Bob Kirby branch of the Warren County Public library did just that Friday. A preschool story time session was held, where the kids also had some fun with words.
According to the Kentucky Department of Education, four key skills that predict future success are phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The department also mentions that reading together for at least 20 minutes a day achieves all the above. The sooner parents begin teaching their kids these skills at home, the greater their educational success will be throughout their lives.
Youth Services Librarian at the Bob Kirby branch, Elizabeth Rheaume, says getting these skills in early is incredibly beneficial.
“Just giving children opportunities to interact with literature helps them to feel more comfortable and develop that joy of reading. With our story times, we like to have not only just the books, but activities that will connect with the books,” Rheaume said.
More times and dates of summer reading activities can be found on the Warren County Public Library’s website.
