Summer Food Program extended for 450,000 Kentucky children
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Gov. Andy Beshear has announced that healthy meals will continue to be provided for 450,000 Kentucky children over the summer.
According to a release by the governor’s office, the federal government approved an extension of the Summer Food Program. Students 6 to 18 years old who are receiving SNAP, KTAP or Kinship Care benefits, as well as children attending schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program will automatically be enrolled, the release states.
“Food isn’t just a necessity – it’s a building block for strong, thriving communities,” Beshear says. “By extending this program, we are not only fighting hunger but also laying the groundwork for a healthier future for our families. I want to thank the many individuals and organizations who work tirelessly to feed our people through efforts like these.”
Officials say each eligible student will receive a one-time benefit of $120 to buy food throughout the summer while school is out.
This program is supported through the federal Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer Program, officials say.
To apply, families may submit applications until Aug. 15 at kysebt.ky.gov. Assistance is also available by calling the Department of Community Based Services at 855-306-8959 or by visiting a local office.
