Summer Camp for Academically Talented Middle School Students takes over WKU’s campus

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Students from around the world have been coming together to learn new skills this summer on Western Kentucky University’s campus.

The Summer Camp for Academically Talented Students, or SCATS, offers 6th through 8th graders the opportunity to explore their interests and make new friends.

We caught up with students during an acting class, as they worked on perfecting their monologues. But that just scratches the surface of the things students are doing, from rocket making to building musical instruments and much more.

The main goal is to encourage young learners to grow their skills and bring that knowledge back home.

“Many of them are picking up on other skills that allow them to problem solve in order to build the rocket or to build the instrument or to… and you fill in the blank,” Dr. Julia Roberts, executive director of WKU’s Center for Gifted Studies, said. “It could be many, many different things. Skills plus knowledge lead to success, and opportunities for these young people are pretty unlimited.”

The camp runs until Friday and even more students will make their way to Bowling Green next week for another camp hosted by the Center for Gifted Studies.
