Student-run club, the Pincushion, teaches skills at South Warren High School

WARREN COUNTY, Ky. – A student-run entrepreneurial club at South Warren High School is giving kids tools of independence and a sense of accomplishment with nothing more than needles, thread and scissors.

It’s been a pathway at South Warren since the school opened and has been fed into by hundreds of students throughout the years who have been embroidering sweatshirts, sewing dresses and heat pressing letters onto various items. The club, called the Pincushion, has given means to many students interested in fashion and interior design.

News 40 spoke to a couple of students, who said it’s made a significant impact in their life, including being able to make their own clothes and repair them if needed.

Brandy Houchens, who teaches the fashion and interior design class, said that there aren’t many seamstresses left these days, and it’s good to be able to give kids basic life skills to use wherever they go.

Houchens said one project they’re working on right now includes some embroidery and clothing items for a former teacher who is soon giving birth to a baby boy.
