Strong Second Half Propels Dragons Past Spartans

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Warren Central guard Dre Boyd notched a game-high 21 points, including 17 in the second half, and led the top-seeded Dragons (23-6) to a 70-56 win over #4 South Warren (16-15) in the District 14 Tournament Quarterfinals.
The two rivals played at a frenetic, action-packed pace through the first two quarters of Tuesday night’s showdown, with the Spartans taking a 30-27 lead at half.
Warren Central came out of the break on fire, though, and used a decisive 14-2 run to turn that three-point halftime deficit into a 41-33 lead with 4:21 left in the quarter.
Fourth-seeded South Warren quickly answered with four straight points from Caleb Mitchell-Franklin, but, on this night, Boyd would simply not be denied.
The Dragons’ star senior guard spearheaded a 9-0 spurt to give Warren Central a commanding 50-37 lead and the visitors would cruise the rest of the way.
The win not only gives Warren Central a berth to next week’s Region 4 Tournament at Diddle Areana, but also provides the Dragons with a shot at winning their first district tournament title since 2013.
Warren Central will face the winner of Wednesday’s District 14 Tournament semifinal game between #2 Bowling Green and #3 Greenwood. The championship game will be held on Friday at South Warren High School. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
