Stop flushing your cash down the drain!
Gallons of undetected water waste add up
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Is one of your New Year’s resolutions to save your money in 2023? Bowling Green Municipal Utilities says you’re likely flushing your cash down the drain without even knowing it.
First off, check your toilet flapper. A leaky flapper, which controls how much water from the toilet tank goes into the bowl, can waste gallons of water between flushes.
Try to stay away from your garbage disposal. BGMU says the modern convenience is poorly named, and usually abused.
Instead, BGMU urges people to use the sink’s food catch to toss out bulky pieces, especially fatty meats that can really clog the drain.
Another good idea? Despite their name, flushable wipes are not doing your drain any favors.
BGMU Water/Wastewater Systems Manager Mike Gardner said, “They do flush. The problem is, they can combine with the stuff you put down your garbage disposal. It can back up into your system, and that can be very messy and distressing, unfortunately.”
Gardner says any time you use flushable wipes, makeup wipes, or baby wipes, stick to the trashcan instead of the toilet.
