Staying safe during the listeria outbreak
BOWLING GREEN, KY.- The environmental and foodborne pathogen listeria has been discovered in several states surrounding Kentucky.
If you are exposed to listeria, it can cause infection. The disease can grow in those with weak immune systems.
Doctors encourage people to throw out meat after 3-5 days, even in the refrigerator or freezer. Patricia Dellez Watson, a Med Center Disease Specialist describes the impact of listeria she says, “It is there in food, but what type of food? So the interesting thing with listeria is that it is a very resilient bacteria. It survives in cold temperatures so different from other bacteria that can get contaminate food. The Listeria survives in the refrigerator temperatures.”
If you are pregnant and have consumed anything that might be contaminated by listeria, you are encouraged to call your doctor now because your immune system is the most vulnerable.
