Staying prepared: the difference between a tornado warning and tornado watch

Preparing For Severe Weather

KENTUCKY – Kentucky Emergency Management has shared a reminder about the difference between a tornado warning and a tornado watch.

According to emergency management officials, the following fall under each category:

Tornado Watch: Be prepared

  • A tornado watch is issued when a tornado is possible.
  • Know your safe place (storm shelter, basement, interior hall away from windows.)
  • Be ready to act quickly if a warning is issued.

Tornado Warning: Take action

  • A tornado warning is issued when a tornado is happening or about to happen.
  • Immediately seek shelter in your safe place.
