Officer Involved Shooting

WHITESBURG, Ky. – Kentucky State Police is investigating a trooper-involved shooting in Letcher County.

KSP Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) says it responded to a request from the Letcher County Sheriff’s Office and KSP Post 13 to investigate the shooting on Saturday evening in Whitesburg.

The investigation shows that an LCSO Deputy and a KSP Trooper responded to a domestic disturbance with alleged gunshots at a home located off KY-160.

Officers arrived at the scene, and the complainant said that Julian Smith, 25, of Jeremiah, was creating a disturbance.

Officers located Smith, who then fled into a wooded area. Officers say Smith possessed a pistol.

The officers fired their agency-issued firearms, striking Smith.

KSP says both officers provided medical aid to Smith before EMS arrived. Smith was transported to the Johnson City Medical Center for treatment of injuries. KSP says Smith is in stable condition.

The officers did not sustain injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.
