RICHMOND, Ky. – Over 200 Special Olympics bowling athletes will return to Southern Lanes in Bowling Green this Saturday, Oct. 25 for the Special Olympics Kentucky Area 5 Bowling Green Tournament.

The tournament will take place in three sessions.

The first will be a singles competition for male bowlers, with opening ceremonies taking place at 8:45 a.m. and the competition beginning at 9 a.m.

The second session will be for female singles, ramp assisted bowlers and the Unified bowling competition, which pairs a Special Olympics bowler with a partner who does not have an intellectual disability. That session’s opening ceremony is slated for 11:45 a.m., with bowling beginning at noon.

Participants in the tournament bowl two games with total pin fall determining the winner in each division. Athletes who win their division and some second-place finishers will qualify to compete in the State Bowling Tournament in Louisville Dec. 6-7.

Dillon Meador of Rockfield, who was recently selected to compete as part of Team Kentucky’s bowling delegation at next year’s Special Olympics USA Games in Minneapolis, will compete in the morning session.

The Area 5 Bowling Tournament includes Special Olympics athletes from Allen, Barren, Butler, Christian, Edmonson, Grayson, Logan, Metcalfe, Simpson, Todd and Warren counties.

Bowling for Special Olympics Kentucky generally draws over 1,300 athletes statewide, according to a release. Special Olympics Kentucky says the State Bowling Tournament is annually the largest individual sport competition on the Special Olympics Kentucky calendar.
