Spartan Success: Grissom talks year one, future of SWHS athletics
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – We have just a few days left in the KHSAA dead period, but one school that is anxious to hit the ground running is South Warren High School, and News 40 Sports had the chance to speak with Spartan athletic director Jason Grissom following a whirlwind of a first year in charge.
“ I tell people a lot of times when I took over this job, it was kind of like being born on third base because there was a lot of success from the previous athletic administration, the coaches here that had already been developed, and my hope is to build on that and just to keep that going,” said South Warren Middle and High School athletic director Jason Grissom.
Grissom went through a very busy first year as South Warren athletic director, but it was a good kind of busy as the school saw eight regional team championships, including five during the spring, with a combination of new and returning programs.
Now, as he enters year two, there’s more work being done to continue improving the state of Spartan sports.
“You always want to be the best at everything, that’s your goal, and if your facilities aren’t there then that’s a hard sell,” said Grissom. “With the indoor [facility] here, with what’s coming on this campus, it’s hard to argue that we don’t have the best of the best. That just goes along with the teams. They know there’s an expectation there, ‘Hey, we’ve got the best facilities. We want to have the best teams, we’ve got great coaches,’ all that in place makes my job a lot easier.”
August 1 is the approximate date for completion on a pair of projects as the football field goes from grass to turf, including a new track around the gridiron, and the soccer/lacrosse pitch also makes the switch to artificial turf.
Once those renovations are finished, Spartan baseball will receive a new turf infield set to be completed by the spring, and with all the exciting updates coming to South Warren, Grissom looks forward to his second year at the helm but doesn’t expect many changes because he knows that the standard is the standard.
“People know when they come here, student athletes and coaches know that the expectations are very high here, so we celebrate the years, but then when the next season rolls over, as it’s getting ready to right now, we just expect the same thing, and even more,” said Grissom.
