South Central Kentucky residents preparing for Wreaths Across America
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – As Christmas gets closer, many families are taking time to remember loved ones they’ve lost and the good times they shared.
Tomorrow is also a special day to honor the men and women who fought for the freedoms we enjoy. Wreaths Across America will place thousands of wreaths on the graves of fallen service members across the country. Here in South Central Kentucky, hundreds of wreaths will be laid to honor those who served and have since passed. The tradition started at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, and has grown nationwide as a way to say “thank you” to our veterans and their families.
“Wreaths Across America began a number of years ago at Arlington National Cemetery. And the gentleman had some wreaths left over, and he got the idea of taking them down there. And from that, it’s grown to thousands of cemeteries across the United States, which will all be participating anymore” said owner of JC Kirby and Son Kevin Kirby.
Kirby says that Wreaths Across America plays an important role in education as well, teaching the younger generations about the sacrifices others made to provide the freedoms we enjoy.
“One thing is to show our children, we have a lot of children come out here to help their parents. And I think it’s very important to show them what freedom is about how these people, helped us with our freedoms in our country and what what the military is all about in our country to these young children” said Kirby.
They are always looking for as many volunteers as possible. If you would like to volunteer, you can sign up tomorrow at JC Kirby and Son Funeral Home on Lovers Lane at 9 am.
