South Central Kentucky has a new opportunity for artists with disabilities

BOWLING GREEN Ky.- At the Kentucky Museum on the campus of Western Kentucky University, an opportunity for artists with disabilities has become available.

An exhibit called Side By Side is providing this opportunity, and it’s thanks to VSA Kentucky, which stands for vision, strength, and artistic expression.

Students with disabilities throughout Kentucky participate in visual arts classes with VSA Kentucky approved teaching artists. The students are then partnered with the professional artist to make a collaborative work of art.

Executive director of VSA Kentucky, Delaire Rowe, explains what values the kids take away from the experience.

“The kids do gain and cultivate their artistic skills, but they’re also learning how to interact on different social levels. There are the interactions they have with other kids, then they have a different type of interaction with the community artists,” said Rowe.

This exhibit is made possible by funding through the WHAS crusade for children.
