SoKY’s Choice: Lip Sync Battle Brings Music, Costumes, and Community Support to Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WNKY) — The Capitol Theatre lit up with shiny sequins, wigs, and air guitars Saturday night, but the annual Lip Sync Battle was about much more than the music. The event raises funds for Megan’s Mobile Grocery, a nonprofit that delivers fresh food to neighborhoods across Bowling Green.

“It’s fun, it’s exciting, but it’s also fun with a purpose,” said Jason Brown, a board member for Megan’s Mobile Grocery. “It helps fund the grocery, which means families in food deserts right here in Bowling Green get access to groceries they might not otherwise have. And to me, that’s just huge.”

The grocery-on-wheels was the vision of founder Megan Davidson, who died in 2019. Her idea continues to roll on in the form of a fully stocked van that brings produce and essentials directly to communities without a nearby supermarket.

“The grocery is literally a store in a van,” said event coordinator Sarah Bessinger. “It drives around to neighborhoods that don’t have a walkable grocery store, so we provide fresh foods and essentials right where they live.”

Dozens of local schools, nonprofits, and businesses performed elaborate routines, drawing cheers and laughter from a packed house. For participants, the excitement of the competition matched the impact of its cause.

“It’s exhilarating,” said Gretchen Mitchell, a participant and manager of the SOKY Center. “Everyone puts so much time and effort into preparing, and then the music starts—and before you know it, it’s over. But for those few minutes, the crowd is electric.”

Organizers say the Lip Sync Battle is as much about honoring Davidson’s legacy as it is about putting on a show.

“This was Megan’s idea, and we’ve carried the torch after she passed away,” Bessinger said. “It’s a fun way to bring the community together and keep her vision alive.”
