SOKY Robot Royale prepares Warren County students for the future

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The SOKY Robot Royale had record participation this year.

Students from Warren County Public Schools built their own robots from kits and coded their own creations to compete in Tuesday’s competitions, which took place at Downing Student Union on Western Kentucky University’s campus.

Participants ranged from elementary to high school grades. The event also allowed students to interact with hands-on science stations.

“This is a record year,” Adam Vincent, digital learning coach at Warren County Public Schools, says. “We have 424 students show up today. The cutoff was going to be around 300, but we couldn’t turn anybody away. But It’s been a great, great event.”

One student from North Warren Elementary said, “My favorite part of the event is probably line follow, just because we’ve worked hard on it. And it was really fun.”

Another North Warren Elementary student said, “What I like about robotics is the teamwork and how I can learn from coding and different stuff like that.”

A third North Warren student said they like how they have to work on teamwork more and “really talk to each other and talk about our problems.”

Warren County Public Schools wants to prepare students for the careers of the future, and nothing interests young people in science more than robots. The statewide student technology leadership program will be in Lexington later this month, and we hope to see a lot of these young people involved.
