SoKY Ice Rink prepares for the end of the season

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – While the winter season has taken full effect, the Warren County Parks and Recreation department is preparing for the final week of the SoKY Ice Rink.

The SoKY Ice Rink opened up for the season in November and plays host to fun for the whole community this season. Events like cast iron skillet curling, hockey, birthday parties and of course public skating were popular among residents this year with the rink seeing around 14,000 visitors.

“This season has been incredible, man. I mean, so we. Yeah. We’re close. January 25th is our last public session. It’s been really good. We’ve had everything. Birthday parties, hockey broom ball. It’s it’s been really good. The community has come out in huge numbers again. And we’ve had an excellent season. SoKY ice rink,” said Ryan Pattee, special projects coordinator for Warren County Parks and Recreation.

The SoKY Ice Rink is very special to many people, but to one group it’s an opportunity that does not come around often. Hockey players take the opportunity to participate in the great events like the tournaments, and even hockey lessons available for kids wanting to learn.

This year will also see and added bonus as former NHL player and actor Steve Carlson will make an appearance, all in a effort to help grow the game in Kentucky.

“Providing that opportunity for people of all ages to come out and learn hockey and play hockey is amazing. And yeah, we have the outdoor rink down there near Basil Griffin and then of course, we have this seasonally, which brings lots of hockey. We have the camps open, hockey for adults and kids. And then, of course, the tournament coming up on Jan. 31. It’s amazing to sit back and watch the sport of hockey grow in our region, whether it be here in Bowling Green in Owensboro, Lexington, the entire region is really catching on to hockey right now,” Pattee said.

The last time the public will be able to enjoy public skate will be on Jan. 25, with the three on thee hockey tournament beginning on Jan. 31.
