Simpson County Welcome Center closing until Fall
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- The Simpson County Welcome Center closed down on Thursday. The building will be demolished in the coming weeks, and replaced with a brand new facility.
The welcome center located at the zero mile marker on Interstate 65 North was built in 1974. Since then, the facility has not received any major upgrades and has experienced frequent maintenance issues, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
In the coming weeks the old facility will be completely demolished. The new one will be much larger and have more safety features. The new design will resemble Hart County rest areas on I-65.
“‘It’s a really old facility and it’s becoming a very expensive maintenance routine for us. So it’s just time. It’s time to demolish this old one completely and put in an all new facility. One of the benefits is it’s going to be all ADA compliant which is very important,” said Wes Watt, public information officer, KYTC District 3.
During construction the truck parking will remain open with portable toilets available.Construction is expected to be complete in the fall of this year.
