Simpson County School teacher is a semifinalist for the 2021 Kentucky Teacher of the Year award

FRANKLIN, Ky. – A local teacher is a semifinalist for Teacher of the Year, all while going to school himself.

After a nomination, application and judging process was completed, 24 teachers were awarded the 2021 Kentucky Teachers award.

Out of those 24 teachers, nine were chosen to be semifinalists for the 2021 Kentucky Teacher of the Year award.

Simpson Elementary librarian, Samuel Northern, is one of nine semifinalists in the state for the 2021 Teacher of Year award.

“It was unexpected, especially looking at the other educators who were considered achievement winners. You know, some of them I knew before this because they’re just educators I see at conferences and network with on social media and so, from them I’ve learned a lot. So, to be in that class with that type of caliber and to be considered makes you feel quite humbled,” said Northern.

Northern is also currently a doctoral student at Western Kentucky University.

Northern taught middle school English classes for six years before making his way to Simpson Elementary where he is a librarian for young kids.

Northern says to be a good teacher, you must first be a good learner.

“I love learning. I consider myself a life-long learner. Before I’m a teacher I’m a learner. That’s what I do all the time. I get uncomfortable when I do things the same two times in a row so every year is different. I just try to build and find those ways that I can be creative and give students different opportunities,” said Northern.

Tim Schlosser, the superintendent of Simpson County Schools, admits the nomination wasn’t surprising.

“I think it is very well deserved. I think he has worked extremely hard to get to this point in his career and it’s always good to see. You know we have a lot of teachers at work extremely hard but for him to be recognized at this level. So I was really excited for him and our school and our district,” said Tim Schlosser.

A classroom lesson review and interview with each semifinalist will result in the selection of 2021 Kentucky Teacher of the Year and will go on to represent Kentucky in the 2021 National Teacher of the Year competition.

Awards will be presented in October.
