Simpson County law enforcement warns of package delivery scam

FRANKLIN, Ky. – The Simpson County Sheriff’s Office is warning the community about a scam involving delivered packages.
According to authorities, a “brushing scam” can involve a package being delivered that was not ordered. Inside, the package may have a note with a QR code.
Deputies say scammers are mailing the packages, which can show Amazon on them or another retailer, with a note that says to “see who sent it,” “claim a prize” or “thank the sender.”
Scanning the code can lead to fake websites, which could steal your information.
Some of these codes can even install malware on your phone or other device, authorities say.
If you receive one of these packages, do not scan the code. If you did not order it, assume it’s suspicious, and double check online shopping accounts for unauthorized purchases. Report the package to the retailer and keep photos of the package.
Finally, if you scanned the code, monitor your accounts and change passwords.
