Sheriff’s deputies use Narcan kit for the first time and save a life

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-The use of Narcan has saved a person’s life, just days after the Warren County Sheriff’s Office finished its training on how to properly administer the drug overdose nasal spray.

On Tuesday, deputies from the Warren County Sheriff’s office were called out to an apartment on Blue Level Road, where a person had apparently overdosed on opioid drugs.

Deputies performed CPR to revive the person, and they also used Narcan, a drug used to counteract the effects of opioids.

“He, through his training, recognized that it might have been an overdose. With the assistance of EMS, they administered the Narcan. The person came to and was revived,” said Sheriff Brett Hightower.

The overdose victim, whose identity has not been released, survived thanks to the use of the nasal spray that can revive victims of an opioid overdose.

“Warren County has seen our fair share of anything from crack cocaine, now more into the methamphetamine. We have seen some other drugs that have unfortunately become persistent problems here,” said Hightower.

The sheriff’s office has been able to receive the Narcan kits, and use them to save a person’s life, thanks to Drug Free Warren County.

“That’s exactly why we did it. I think it’s very important to be able to provide things like that when we can for our local folks, and to know that it was a benefit for someone is really exciting for us,” said Amy Stillwell, program director at Drug Dree Warren County.

Drug Free Warren County hopes to continue working with the sheriff’s office and provide more Narcan kits in the future.

“We don’t want this to be a one-time thing. We do want to be able to provide things for our law enforcement. The kits do have to be replaced every two years. We do hope to have more money in the future, continue that relationship that we have built with them and with other people in the community as well,” said Stillwell.

Drug Free Warren County has also trained local church security teams on how to properly administer Narcan. They hope the more widespread its use becomes, the more lives that will be saved.
