Sheriff Peanuts Gaines shows off his office before ending a storied career

You may not know it, but there’s a museum located inside the Warren County Courthouse.

This museum features sports memorabilia, photos with notable figures, awards and even a bourbon collection.

This museum is actually the office belonging to Sheriff Jerry “Peanuts” Gaines.

“It is a museum and I never looked at it that way. I got things in here from everywhere,” said Gaines.

The collection started 40 years ago when Gaines first became sheriff.

“It took me five days to hang all these. I still have a stack, a foot tall, that hasn’t been put up,” said Gaines.

That stack won’t be put up because Gaines lost his reelection bid last week.

Soon, a halter worn in 1977 by Triple Crown winner, Seattle Slew, a Michael Jordan signed basketball, a bottle of water belonging to Hillary Clinton and everything else, will be packed away in boxes.

When the sheriff looks around his office, he sees 40 years of great memories through all the gifts he’s received, including one of his prized possessions, a 42 lb bronze statue, commemorating being named 2010 National Sheriff of the Year.

“I think it says they appreciate what I’ve done for them,” said Gaines. At the time, I just did it. Some people say, what’s your most satisfying job? It’s when I go home in the evening and I’ve helped somebody that day. When I go home, December 31st it will be over.”

What won’t be over is the stories the sheriff can tell you about each one of his office items. It’s something he will continue to do well into retirement.

The sheriff will begin packing his belongings in the next few weeks. He says he will keep most of the items inside a trailer he owns.
