Severe winter weather causes power outages for nearly 1,000 people

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The severe winter weather Southern Kentucky is experiencing left nearly 1,000 Kentucky households in this area without power.

Warren RECC has worked throughout Thursday to restore power. Kim Phelps with Warren RECC describes what people lost.

“Pretty much anything that’s electric. So heat, lights, anything like that; so no microwave, no oven, no TV, lights, anything like that,” said Phelps.

A system of sleet and freezing rain that moved through the area on Wednesday night caused outages affecting people mainly in the northern section of the Warren RECC service territory.

“The freezing rain is heavy, the ice is heavy on the lines. And it’s also heavy on trees and branches so it can cause a tree branch to break and fall on a line and break it,” said Phelps.

The counties affected include Edmonson, Butler, Ohio and Grayson.

Joselle Busard was one person affected by the storm. Her family kept power, but completely lost internet service. Her husband works from home and her two sons are in virtual schooling, making their daily routine extremely difficult.

“I’m really frustrated and annoyed, and worried that I won’t get things done,” said Busard.

The Warren RECC advises people to stay safe and prepared.
